Charles DELACROIX (1741-1805) conventionnel (Marne), minister of foreign relations, father of the painter. L.S., Paris 16 thermidor IV (August 3, 1796), to citizen RIVALS, minister plenipotentiary of the French Republic to the Landgrave of Hesse Casse, in Cassel; 2 pages in-fol. on the letterhead Le Ministre des Relations extérieures, small vignette. On the title of Excellence granted to French Ministers abroad. He learned that in several Courts and Governments "where one can ignore our principles of political Equality and our Laws, the French Ministers received even officially the title of Excellence. This qualification, which is rather inappropriate, "is however bearable according to the intention which dictates it to them, since the term of Excellence is devoted among them to recall ideas of consideration and respect; but it would be a fault, and even a serious fault, to receive from French agents and citizens any such qualification. [...] I therefore recommend you, Citizen, to take the most scrupulous care not to receive similar titles from French Citizens"...
