LOUIS XVIII (1755-1824) King of France. P.A.S. following a r - Lot 547
LOUIS XVIII (1755-1824) King of France. P.A.S. following a report, Merseburg August 17, 1796; 3 1/2 pages in-fol. on column. Very interesting report concerning the diffusion in France of the proclamationLouis XVIII aux Français. It is necessary to ensure him the greatest publicity, and to prevent that the "regicides" do not hinder the distribution and do not spread a "falsified edition" of it. This writing must be widely spread in France before being known abroad, and first in province before arriving in Paris. It will be thus initially printed and distributed in the principal cities of the kingdom by the care of the agents and "people of the interior who are arranged to serve the king in the manner in which he wants it to be [...] this ecritne must arrive at Paris only when it will circulate in all the provinces [...] One can arrive at this result only by employing the most inviolable secrecy and the most prudent activity". M. de V. [VEZET] will consult for this with MM. du Nau (of Bern) and de la Marre (of Lausanne). Louis XVIII adds 12 lines in his hand: "I rely on the zeal, the activity and the intelligence of M.M. de V., du V. and de l. M. to follow to the letter, or to rectify the present instruction so as to fulfill its purpose. M. dee V. will provide the light of his wisdom and his knowledge of the frontier provinces. M. du V. will provide the information and advice that his experience gives him. M. de 1.M. in addition to his knowledge of the interior, will give me - I hope - the new mark of attachment to make if it is necessary on this occasion, a new trip to France. They will be well sure, all three, as well as those whom they will believe to have to associate, that I knew to appreciate an important service"...One joined a printed proofLouis XVIII to the French, Dillingen July 22, 1796 (3 p. in-8), precious copy with handwritten corrections and additions; plus the copy of time of a letter of Louis XVIII, March 8, 1797 (1 p. and quarter in-4), about the people excluded by his declaration of July 1795 and who make known their wish for the restoration of the monarchy.
