Louis de FONTANES (1757-1821) writer, Grand Master of the University, friend of Chateaubriand. autograph manuscript, [September 23, 1800]; 12 pages in-4, erasures and corrections. Speech for the transfer of TURENNE's ashes to the Invalides, September 23, 1800: "The French revolution, by giving the greatest spectacles to the human race, seemed to contradict all the ancient traditions, and to change, in a way, the experience of the peoples, and of the ages. [...] For the first time, we have seen a great political body change its nature and form without its parts having been divided. This empire overthrown on its old foundations was re-established with more glory on new foundations [...] I like to retrace the great destinies of the newborn Republic in front of the manes of this hero who belonged to the most brilliant days of the monarchy [...] Yes: warriors, citizens, French people who listen to me, Turenne is son of your glory, he contemplates you and applauds you "...
