Louis-René-Edouard, prince de ROHAN (1734-1803) cardinal, bi - Lot 592
Louis-René-Edouard, prince de ROHAN (1734-1803) cardinal, bishop of Strasbourg, diplomat, unfortunate hero of the affair of the Collier. L.S. "the cardinal prince of Rohan" with autograph compliment, Ettenheim November 1801, to a "dear Lord"; 2 pages and a quarter in-4 (split in the fold). Cardinal de Rohan announces his resignation from the archbishopric of Strasbourg, on order of Pope Pius VII, who demanded the resignation of all bishops, both constitutional and refractory, in a clause of the Concordat signed with Bonaparte; this contrary to 14 of the 18 bishops who composed the Assembly. I do not share their opinion; and the disadvantage of France without bishops does not seem to me to be an accurate statement. Even though a bishop resigns, he continues to govern his diocese until his successor has presented himself. [It is therefore the Pope, whom we know to be perfectly well informed, who assures us that the resignations of our bishops are necessary for the benefit of religion and the Church; and that he knows no way to avoid this measure and that we must submit to it with resignation. Consequently, as soon as he received the official request in the name of the Holy Father for his resignation, he gave it... He sent him a copy, short and simple as he thought such an act of submission should be: "May heaven grant that religion and the Church may experience the advantage that the Pope hopes to obtain; and protect the Episcopate from being divided in opinion"...
