Joseph FOUCHÉ (1759-1820) Conventional (Loire Inf.), then Mi - Lot 629
Joseph FOUCHÉ (1759-1820) Conventional (Loire Inf.), then Minister of Police. Autograph manuscript (draft), [ca. 1815?]; 2 pages in-4, with erasures and corrections. Notes and political thoughts, probably a draft for his Memoirs, the manuscript of which was burned by his son upon his death... "The ministry of which I was a part had enlightenment and love of the state, several members of this administration had shown skill in business. It is repugnant to me to occupy Europe with my personal defense. Public esteem and my conscience have placed me too high to justify myself before Europe and before France, it is enough for me to give a faithful picture of the events [......] to replace under their eyes the events in their order and in their integrity, the least gap weakens the interest of it, I need calm to give myself up to this important work, then that it must be used as materials for the History, that one will want to consider it as a new proof of my love for my fatherland "... He does not forgive the government of Louis XVIII to have forced him to the exile, and ruminates his discontent. On the back, some brief and disjointed notes: "Those who exert vengeance and proscriptions are not safe from the terror they inspire. [Prosperity flees before violence and darkness. [...] Public prosperity can only result from a strengthened state. [...] Everyone needed indulgence. Was there any other way to strengthen the state? Is forgiveness anything other than justice?
