Jean, baron de BATZ (1761-1822) royalist conspirator, he tried to save Louis XVI from the guillotine and to free Marie-Antoinette. L.A.S., Paris October 3, 1819, to General Ledru des Essarts; 2 pages and a quarter in-4, address. He leaves Paris, when the general arrives there... "I have seen how much you have obtained in your somewhat stormy division, the confidence of the people - reasonable people and the general respect; the public and the ministry must appreciate your wisdom by the perfect calm that you have been able to maintain. You will never have anything but success"... As for him, he shows his disappointment at not having been retained, although he was the most senior in rank in his division. "I thought I was in eternal oblivion, when I received two very obliging letters from our minister; the first one told me that his intention was to place me in the army staff; the second one told me that I was available for service...
