Armand BARBÈS (1809-1870) politician, ardent revolutionary. - Lot 655
Armand BARBÈS (1809-1870) politician, ardent revolutionary. L.A.S., Nîmes Prison February 26 [1848] "one o'clock in the morning", to a "good and venerable friend"; 2 pages and a quarter in-8. Very beautiful letter greeting the Republic, before leaving the prison while he was incarcerated since 1839... "a word before leaving my cell. France becomes again the great people, and we have the republic! This thought breaks my soul with happiness, and I would perhaps not have the strength to speak about it, if I had been able, on this great occasion, to pay my debt to the fatherland. But to have done nothing, to leave here like a kind of wreck that one collects after the storm, ah! that makes me so ashamed, so sad that I could say to myself on the other hand excessively unhappy at this moment "... One came to announce his release towards 10 o'clock in the evening. He went for a walk in town, "and having nothing better to do, I returned, by a last caprice of prisoner in my former residence"... A small P.A.S. (January 1, 1847), for a Christmas present, an old copy of a letter dated April 4, 1848, and a photograph (business card size) are attached.
