Charles BAUDELAIRE (1821-1967). L.A.S., Thursday evening [Au - Lot 671
Charles BAUDELAIRE (1821-1967). L.A.S., Thursday evening [August 28, 1862], to Édouard LAUMONIER; 1 page and a quarter in-8, address (crack repaired). About Edgar Poe's L'Ange du Bizarre. [Published in La Presse of February 17, 1860, with cuts and errors; Baudelaire gave a new edition in Le Monde illustré of February 21 and 28, 1863. The letter was published by Claude Pichois under a wrong date (Pléiade, t. II, p. 225)]. He asks him to "ask your cousin to look in the collection of the Press [...] for a serial of Moi, L'Ange du Bizarre, and to copy it. It is excessively hurried. [Your cousin's writing is good, but the mistakes in the prose poems were so numerous that it took me a long time to correct them. It is necessary "to persuade him that a copy riddled with faults imposes a great deal of correction work on the author, and that it is necessary to copy like a person who understands"... He adds that the serial appeared "between the middle of the year 1859 and the middle of 1860".
