César FRANCK (1822-1890) Autograph Musical Manuscript, Robin - Lot 680
César FRANCK (1822-1890) Autograph Musical Manuscript, Robin Gray, Irish Ballad, [ca. 1843]; 8 fol. pages on 2 bifoliate. Melody for voice and piano: "When the sheep are in the sheepfold"..., on a poem by Florian [CFF141 (FWV 74)]. "This is a kind of ballad. The piano alone presents a very simple thematic element, skilfully transformed by extension into an ingenuous cantabile. By its pulsation [...], by the way it turns around a pedal note, this element is very Schubertian. It plays a determining role in the moving conclusion of the piece, when the narrator evokes her failed marriage: promised to James, who has gone far away to seek her fortune, she has been forced by her parents to marry the old Robin Gray. But James returns... Franck articulates the episodes of the story with ease without over-dramatizing it, once again emulating the Schubert of the ballads" (J.-M. Fauquet). In B flat major in 2/4, it is marked Andantino. The manuscript is carefully written in brown ink on Lard-Esnault paper with 4 systems of 3 staves per page. It bears at the end a dedication: " to Miss Claire Féréol C. Franck ". It is to the pretty voice of Claire Féréol (1826-1940) that Franck will dedicate his first melodies; she will always remain very close to Franck, who will be her piano teacher.
