BUFFET-CHALLIÉ Jean-Laurent (1880-1943) - Lot 76
BUFFET-CHALLIÉ Jean-Laurent (1880-1943) Valserine Valley, towards the Faucille Pass (Jura) oil on panel, signed lower right, located on the back 27 x 35 cm. Jean Challié was born in 1880. At the age of 17, he attended Gérôme's classes with Fernand Léger. In 1900, he attended the Médrano circus with Picasso, Max Jacob, Rouault, Van Dongen... and began a promising career, but refused any official event. He painted the Loing with Picabia, his future brother-in-law, and, in Montmartre, became friends with Raoul Dufy. From 1909 until the war, he exhibited in numerous salons and galleries, and was unanimously praised by the critics (Apollinaire, Vauxcelles...). Gassed in 1915, he moved to Étival, a typical village of the Jura plateaus, where his maternal family owned a house. The Jura inspired him: landscapes, snow, farm work and family life. Between the two wars, he was again present in the salons and galleries (Manzi-Joyant, Allard, Bernheim...). He became close to Vuillard. But the second war isolated him in the Jura.
