SAINT-DOMINGUE. Jean-Jacques BACON DE LA CHEVALERIE (1731-1821) a colonist of Saint-Domingue, maternal uncle of Barnave, he was president of the first provincial assembly of the northern part of the island and a virulent slaver. P.S. as president, co-signed by 2 members of the Provincial Assembly, Cape Town January 8, 1790; oblong vellum in-fol. partly printed, letterhead Saint-Domingue, Province du Nord, ink stamp CapSalus Populi Suprema Lex Esto (ink a bit faded). Rare patent of provost general and inspector of the marshes of the Northern Province, for André Desmangles, who will take the rank of colonel of cavalry. Two documents are attached: authorization "to remove from the different hospitals [...] the effects of clothing and weapons of the soldiers who died there" (August 8, 1802); and a memorandum for the supply of straw mats "filled with banana straw" to the military hospital of Santo Domingo (August 18, 1805).
