Jean-Jacques DUVAL d'ÉPRÉMESNIL (1745-1794) a counselor at t - Lot 134
Jean-Jacques DUVAL d'ÉPRÉMESNIL (1745-1794) a counselor at the Parliament of Paris, he was one of the leaders of the parliamentary opposition; a deputy of the nobility (Paris hors les murs) to the Estates General and to the Constituent Assembly, he violently opposed the Revolution; he courageously refused to flee and emigrate and was guillotined. L.A.S., Paris April 24, 1791, to a Duke; 2 pages in-4 (stamp of the Paul Tasbille collection). He has not yet answered his letters... "In the middle of the horrors which surround us, we deputies, the months still pass like days, and the days like hours. [...] We met, Mr. Bailly de Crussol, Mr. President d'Ormesson, and myself. The common opinion is not to give our resignations in May. [...] Duty no longer requires it. Perhaps a more striking occasion will arise. Our approach would be more useful. Until then, the main thing for our constituents is to be faithfully represented. If his letter goes "to the research committee, he will see that I am slowing down, but that I hope"... Attached is a L.A. from his wife, November 24, 1793, to her friend Mme Rameaux (2 p. in-4, address), on the arrest of Éprémesnil: "everybody does justice to my husband, and if he is detained, it is because the law is formal, nobody is angry with him, and one is well convinced that his conduct has always been that of a gallant man"... Former collection André Saudemont (15-16 March 1983, n° 337).
