Antoine de Valdec de LESSART (1742-1792) minister of the Int - Lot 159
Antoine de Valdec de LESSART (1742-1792) minister of the Interior and then of Foreign Affairs at the beginning of the Revolution, he was accused and massacred at Versailles in September 1792. L.S. as "Minister of Foreign Affairs", Paris January 25, 1792, to François BARTHÉLEMY; 1 1/2 pages in-fol. Interesting letter on the attitude of Louis XVI towards the emigrants... "many French emigrants are going to the circle of the Haut-Rhin under the orders of Mr. Prince de Condé [...] they are gathering there in arms with the intention of disturbing our frontiers. The King judges that it is instantaneous to dissipate without any delay this new hearth of troubles and civil war ". The King sends a letter to the Ministry of Mainz. "The King is in the full confidence that the Elector will feel the need to take his request into consideration, and especially to act with the greatest promptitude; indeed the fermentation is extreme; and infinitely unpleasant events would be to fear. He hopes that the Elector of Mainz and the Elector Palatine "will make Mr. Cardinal de Rohan feel that he must finally put an end to the troubles that he is fomenting in our neighborhood".Former collection Léon Le Metayer-Masselin (his stamp).
