L.S. as "Mayor of Paris," Paris July 18, 1792, to the Section des Gobelins; 1 page fol. On his reinstatement as Mayor of Paris. [Following the insurrection of June 20 and the invasion of the Tuileries by the populace, Pétion enters in conflict with the Directory of the department of Paris and is suspended on July 6; in front of the increasing agitation of the Sections, Louis XVI hesitates but confirms on July 12 this suspension, which is at once cancelled by the Assembly]. "How shall I express to you, Messieurs, all my sensibility of the fraternal interest that you have been willing to take in the persecutions that I have experienced and the justice that I have obtained. I will not send you sterile thanks, but I will try to prove to you all my gratitude by continuing to deserve the hatred of the enemies of Liberty and of the Constitution"...Former collection of Patrice Hennessy (his ink stamp).
