Simon d'HILLON, businessman. L.A.S., Paris August 9, 1792, t - Lot 191
Simon d'HILLON, businessman. L.A.S., Paris August 9, 1792, to MM.FOACHE frères, merchants in Le Havre; 3 pages in-4, address. Interesting letter on the situation in Paris on the eve of the insurrection."We are here in a moment of serious crisis; it is today that one discusses the indecent question, not to say criminal, of the King's decree: the major part of the assembly is, as one assures, for the negative but will it be the strongest, and the tribunes which dictate the major part of the decrees will they leave a free course to the discussion, and to the opinions? It is what is very doubtful. Yesterday the people almost knocked out two deputies, Mrs. Dumolard and Vaublanc, who were entering the royal palace after leaving the assembly, where they had had a great deal of influence on the decree which, in the case of Mr. Delafayette, declares that there are no grounds for accusation. What sovereign but the People? The beginning of the letter was devoted to the situation in Saint-Domingue and in the Cape, the houses valiantly defended by a "negre commandant", others devastated and "under the hand of brigants"... Attached are 2 other L.A.S. from the same to the same, business letters and on Saint-Domingue, Paris July 30 and December 8, 1792 (3 and 1 ½ pages in-4, adr.).
