Antoine BARNAVE (1761-guillotiné 1793) the great orator of t - Lot 301
Antoine BARNAVE (1761-guillotiné 1793) the great orator of the Estates-General and the Constituent Assembly. autograph manuscript, [June 1793]; 5 pages in-4 on column. Interesting notes in his defense. Imprisoned after August 10, following the discovery of a compromising document in the King's cabinet, Barnave, "detained for ten months," asks to appear before a court and prepares his defense... "I only ask for justice". He recalls his arrest; he was treated and is treated "like a criminal [...] I did not present any justification because there is no charge against me [...] I always hoped that calm would succeed to so many agitations, and that the day of security could be the day of justice, each moment brings new storms [....] I was accused on a document without authenticity, which is absolutely strange to me, which I can ensure to be completely unknown to me, finally which does not present in it even any appearance of offence [...] document which one says to have been found in Tuileries in the day of August 10. The only thing which could have given place to this piece if it has some reality, they are the conversations which I had sometimes on the public affairs with the former minister of justice Duport Dutertre, my connections with him were not hidden, I shared the esteem which all France had for him and of which in the course of the revolution few men were more worthy. [...] It is certainly very possible that in conversation I showed him my approval for some of the measures expressed in this piece. They must have been in general conformity with my opinion. They seem to have had for object to avoid the war which the dominant party in the legislative assembly wanted to engage or to avoid the war with dignity"... The Act of the Legislative Body of August 16, 1792 with the decree of impeachment of Barnave is attached (printed in Epinal).
