The first was the considerable progress made by the French automobile industry since the First World War. The second element that explains the organization of the "Black Cruise" is the new importance acquired by the Empire since the First World War and the new interest it aroused in an opinion that seemed relatively indifferent to colonization at the end of the 19th century. The "Black Cruise" left Colomb-Béchar on October 25, 1924. For more than a year, the 8 Citroën vehicles travelled 28,000 km across Africa (successively crossing Algeria, Niger, Chad, Oubangui-Chari, the Belgian Congo, and then reaching the Indian Ocean via four different routes), arousing unprecedented enthusiasm among the public as well as in scientific, artistic and economic circles. Beyond the technical and sporting feat, the "Black Cruise" was also entrusted with various missions by the Ministry of Colonies, the Museum of Natural History, the Geographical Society of France and the Under-Secretary of State for Aeronautics. Among the 17 members of the mission were the filmmaker Léon Poirier, Eugène Bergognier (former professor at the West African Medical School), and the painter Alexandre Iacovleff. Released in March 1926, the 70-minute silent film directed by Léon Poirier was a great success. On the same model as the "black cruise" is organized in 1931 a "yellow cruise" in Asia.Source : enseignants.lumni.fr
