DAMIENS. - GROSLEY (Pierre-Jean). Reflections on the Attack - Lot 326
DAMIENS. - GROSLEY (Pierre-Jean). Reflections on the Attack committed on January 5 against the life of the King. S.l.n.d. [dated March 5, 1757]. - Letter of a patriot, Where one reports the facts which prove that the author of the attack committed on the life of the King has accomplices, & the manner in which one instructs his lawsuit. S.l.n.d. [dated March 11, 1757]. - Declaration of war against the Authors of the attempted parricide on the person of the King. S.l.n.d. [dated March 22, 1757]. Together 3 works in one volume in-12, marbled calf, cold fillet, spine decorated, red title, red edges (Binding of the XVIIIth century). Collection of 3 pamphlets related to the trial of Damiens, each in original edition. These libels, due to Pierre-Jean Grosley (1718-1785) and printed clandestinely, were suppressed and condemned to the fire by a decision of the Parliament of Paris on March 30, 1757 (cf. Pierre Rétat, L'Attentat de Damiens, 1979). The Jesuits, suspected of involvement in the attack, are attacked with the greatest firmness: But what is more frightful, & which must make tremble the Sovereigns on their Thrones as long as they will let subsist this monstrous Society in their States; it is that it is by principle that it learned to the subjects to kill their Kings (Letter..., p. 31). Interesting copy constituted at the time by an amateur who added at the end 5 pieces in handwritten verse violently criticizing the Clergy and the Jesuits. Small lack at one of the spines.
