[DARIGAND]. L'Anti-financier, ou Relevé de quelques-uns des - Lot 337
[DARIGAND]. L'Anti-financier, ou Relevé de quelques-uns des malversations dont se rendent quotidiennement coupables les Fermiers Généraux, & des vexations qu'ils commettent dans les Provinces. Amsterdam, 1763. In-8, marbled calf, spine decorated, red title page, red edges (Binding of the time). INED, n°1276. First edition of this violent pamphlet. Darigand, lawyer at the parliament of Paris, was thrown into the Bastille for having published this work. The book made a lot of noise at the time and it was sought with as much eagerness as the police made the most vivid searches to suppress it. It is not possible to express oneself more vehemently against the fermiers-généraux, against the receivers of the tailles, and in general against all the employees of the régie. Darigand forcefully combats the mode of collection of these kinds of taxes, which were too numerous at the time, and which put individuals at the mercy of a swarm of rodent henchmen, known, at the time, under the ridiculous name of rats-de-cave. He paints with horror the vexations to which any father of family was exposed from them in certain provinces (Peignot, Dictionnaire des principaux livres condamnés au feu..., t. I, pp. 90-91). Exceptional copy constituted at the time by an amateur who gathered 10 pieces related to the polemic raised by the Anti-Financier : - Supplément à l'Anti-Financier. S.l.n.d. - La Clef des mystères. S.l.n.d. - L'Antropophagie, ou les antropophages. Amsterdam, 1764. Copper-engraved frontispiece. - Of the true interests of the fatherland. Rotterdam, 1764. - La Pure vérité, Réponse d'un procureur [...] sur un ouvrage qui a pour titre : Réponse à l'Auteur de l'Anti-Financier. S.l., 1764. - Le Contrôleur général imaginaire. S.l.n.d. Folding table p. 45. - Patriotic song. To the tune: Du Port-Mahon. S.l.n.d. To re-establish France, To give it back its abundance, Modify the Finance, For that is all its evil [...]. - Answer to the Author of the Anti-Financier. The Hague, 1764. - Ruling of the court of the Parliament of Rouen, which orders that the Brochure entitled: Réponse à l'Auteur de l'Anti-Financier will be torn up & burned by the Executor of the High Justice... S.l.n.d. [at the end: Rouen, J. J. Le Boullenger, 1764]. - The Vigil of Pézénas. S.l.n.d. A handwritten table of the collection thus constituted is found at the head of the volume. Some pieces have been renamed, in particular the work Des Véritables intérêts de la patrie, whose original format is in-12. Some foxing, traces of wetness on the edges of the quires.
