GAULTIER DE BIAUZAT (Jean-François). Grievances on the surch - Lot 343
GAULTIER DE BIAUZAT (Jean-François). Grievances on the surcharges that the common people support in all kinds of taxes. S.l.n.n., 1788. In-8, paperback, untrimmed, blue mute cover of the time, handwritten title on the back, half red morocco folder and modern case by Devauchelle. INED, n°1990. - Stourm, p. 148. First edition of one of the best expositions of the financial state at the dawn of the Revolution. Gaultier de Biauzat (1739-1815), a lawyer in Clermont-Ferrand and deputy to the National Constituent Assembly, criticized the tax system of the time, which was unfavorable to the Third Estate: "This apperception [must] convince of the enormity of the surcharges that the People bear as a result of the immunities of the Clergy" (p. 240). This brochure made a great impression on contemporary opinion. [...] The author claims a proportional equality in its distribution and rises against exemptions and privileges (Leblanc, De Thomas More à Chaptal, n°354). Copy as issued, having obviously belonged to a deputy of Auvergne of the time: it bears on p. 1 the handwritten bookplate of a person named Guessizol, whose name is quoted by Gaultier Biauzat as one of the deputies and volunteers of the national guards of Puy-Dôme [sic] in the journal Les Révolutions de Paris, n°53, 1790, p. 82. Interesting provenance. Small stamp in red ink on the cover, not identified. Soiling to a few leaves.
