GOUVERNEUR Alfred (1885-c.1951) Portrait of Epinard, Maisons Laffite, 1924 Ink, watercolor and gouache highlights, Signed, located and dated lower right with a note to Marcel Rolland, titled upper right 40x27cm. Epinard was a famous steed who lived between 1920 and 1942 and who notably won the Steward's Cup in Great Britain in 1923, he was presented to King George V on this occasion. Ernest Hemingway won a famous bet thanks to him and he was at the origin of the meeting between Pierre Wertheimer, his owner, and Coco Chanel who was passionate about horses. He was then requisitioned by the Nazis and died of exhaustion in 1942.
