Flask of pilgrim, fiasca schicciata, in polychrome majolica - Lot 291
Flask of pilgrim, fiasca schicciata, in polychrome majolica to historiato. Of piriform form, it illustrates on both sides the siege of a fortress in antiquity with on one side soldiers forming the turtle; handles in the form of a satyr's head with coiled horns; pedestal with two loops. Italy, copy of a gourd kept at the Bargello, probably Ginori, circa 1855/70 Height : 39,8 cm - Width : 24,5 cm (one handle missing, stopper stuck) This flask, hitherto unpublished, is one of the copies reproducing a fiasca of Urbino of the 16th century preserved in the Bargello. All these reproductions are now attributed to an Italian ceramist of the nineteenth century named Ginori who put his name on one of them. It is believed that this artist made many copies for the exhibition of the authentic model at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence between 1854 and 1855. Several of these copies are known to be in public or private collections, including one that belonged to the Damiron collection (Sale Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me. Desbenoit, June 11, 2018, lot 43), another that was sold at Christie's (New York, June 7, 2012, lot 191), and yet another that is kept at the Musée national de la Renaissance in Ecouen (inv. EC80).
