Chrestien de LA CROIX (Count) - Lot 9
Chrestien de LA CROIX (Count) Officer from 1753 to 1787 "The Great Army Merger of the French and Spanish fleets on July 29, 1779 off the French coast Pen, black ink, gray and black wash. Enlarged. Trace of central fold. Glued to sheet. Gilded fillets and blue paper mount. Captioned in the upper part: Being in Battle to the Wind of the Enemy with the post of the Observation Wing and the Light Wing of Frigates, Repeaters, Bombards, Brulots, Fluttes and Hospital during the Fight. Located and dated lower left 27 July 1779 and annotated "Commissioned by Mr. Cte Dorvillier, Lt Gal des Armées de SMTC". Annotated and signed in a cartouche in the lower center: PRESENTED to Monsieur de St Laurent / Colonel coman of the Regiment of Paris: By Mr Chrestien de la Croix Officer of the said Regiment H. 43,5 - L. 80 cm This large drawing which bears in its margins, impeccably calligraphed, the name of each of the 91 vessels, accompanied by that of their commander, illustrates the diversionary maneuver of the Franco-Spanish fleets on the Atlantic coast, under the command of Count Louis Guillouet d'Orvilliers (1710 - 1792). The objective of this great Armada was to threaten England with a landing, first on the island of Whight, then in the city of Portsmouth, as part of its support during the American War of Independence. This naval confrontation planned in the English Channel did not take place, and the fleet was able to cross the Atlantic (Cf. Histoires d'Universités. Pierre Dubois' blog. 1779. Failed expedition to England).
