Jean-Jacques FOCKEDEY (1758-1853) conventional (Nord). P.S. - Lot 48
Jean-Jacques FOCKEDEY (1758-1853) conventional (Nord). P.S. (3 times), co-signed by the administrators of the district of Bergues, December 27 and 28, 1791; 6 pages in-fol. Interesting document on the troubles caused by the civil constitution of the clergy. The commune of Bergues having refused to obey the decree of the General Council of the department of the North concerning the churches, Fockedey comes to Bergues to make respect the law. Fockedey, without fearing the threats of the people, decides to continue his mission; however, he has the national and line troops put under arms. The Municipality, "always occupied with the care to preserve order and peace and to prevent the excesses of a dangerous fermentation which would cause the effusion of blood", proposes a conciliatory way "which was to allow the opening of two churches other than the two parish ones that the people did not want to recognize, that this proposal was in conformity with the Constitution which left the freedom of the religious opinions"... Fockedey, without giving in, succeeded in having the decree executed; after which the commune could present its claim.
