Louis-Marie de LA RÉVELLIÈRE-LÉPEAUX (1753-1824) deputy to t - Lot 203
Louis-Marie de LA RÉVELLIÈRE-LÉPEAUX (1753-1824) deputy to the Constituent Assembly, conventional (Maine-et-Loire), member of the Directory. L.S. as president of the Directory, countersigned by Joseph-Jean Lagarde, secretary general, Paris 23 fructidor IV (September 9, 1796), to Garrau and Saliceti "Commissioners of the Government near the army of Italy"; 3 pages in-fol., vignette and letterhead of the Executive Directory (slight tear at the top of the 3rd page, without missing text). On the Italian Campaign, and the increasing acts of brigandage, and the transport to France of the works of art seized in Italy. The Directory thought that after "having strongly manifested its intentions so that the brigandage exerted in the army of Italy was repressed, [...] one would not have to fear its continuation any more, but the complaints which arrive to us from all parts prove only too much that it is perpetuated with the impudence which can be only the continuation of a too prolonged impunity. The contempt for good morals and knavery are brought to a climax [...] after having offered the scandalous combination of warlike qualities and the most unbridled greed ". It is essential to make cease as soon as possible these "monstrous abuses" with all possible energy: "Suspend or make arrest any Frenchman attached to the service of the army no matter in which capacity, enemy enough of the probity and the glory of his fatherland to defy the duties of the one and to degrade the other"... The Directory also worries about the works of Art that France requisitions in Italy: it is necessary to take care of the "prompt sending in France of the productions of art which have been gathered in Italy for this purpose. However the season advances and the transfer of these invaluable effects would become very difficult if the time of it were put back longer "...
