Executive Directory), draft with erasures and corrections. Speech in the name of the Executive Directory to welcome the two new Directors, Merlin de Douai and François de Neufchâteau, appointed to replace Barthélemy and Carnot, dismissed following the coup d'état of 18 fructidor (4 September 1797). ... "they are finally past these days of anguish or the distrust and the dissension reigned in this enclosure [...] each one of us wants energetically the republic [...] each one of us finally has no other ambition than to see France internally free and quiet and outside great and honoured ".Evoking the recent events which have provoked the 18 fructidor, he declares: "may all the republicans rally and nuances of opinions not make them any more the plaything of aristocracy and fanaticism". It is necessary to fight terrorism. The consolidation of the republic is in the respect of the constitution and "in the principles of the true patriots, of those who join to a great vigor of character a great wisdom in their conduct, to a boundless devotion to freedom an ardent thirst for justice"...Etc.
