CHOUANNERIE. L.A.S. by Richard Marigné, Ancenis 14 messidor - Lot 212
CHOUANNERIE. L.A.S. by Richard Marigné, Ancenis 14 messidor VII (2 July 1799), to a friend; 4 pages in-4. On the disastrous state of the country in Maine-et-Loire. "For a long time we have been aware that the spirit of the Vendée was being worked on surreptitiously, and yet it seemed to us that they wanted to maintain the peace that they had been granted. But always harassed by the priests, the emigrants, many of whom have returned to the Vendée, by thieves and implacable enemies of public peace, representing to them that the old Regime is better than the new one, that the Republic is ready to collapse because of the defeats they say our armies have continually suffered [...] All these false pretexts have fomented their spirits and are leading them to an uprising. During these gatherings, the trees of liberty were cut down, and the constituted bodies were assassinated, "in particular the watchmaker Citen Leclerc, who used to live in Chollet. If the government does not intervene, one will see "the civil war spread and become more terrible than it has ever been, having in its insurgents many deserters, emigrants, and priests"... They have passed to the left bank of the Loire, and from 30 are now 300: "they are masters of all that depends on the depart. of Maine and Loire, except Chollet. On the right bank they are masters of the major part, and are at least 1200 ". The harvest will be lost if one does not come to their help; he begs his friend to intervene with his colleagues to "thwart and destroy the cruel operations and destructions of these villains"...
