VILLARS (Maréchal de). Life of the marshal duke of Villars, written by himself. And given to the public by M. Anquetil. Paris, Moutard, 1784. 4 volumes in-12, marbled calf, spine ornamented, titles and tomaison, red edges (Binding of the time). First edition, decorated with a portrait of the author and 4 folding plans of battle. The duke of Villars distinguished himself in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714): he inflicted heavy losses on the forces commanded by Prince Eugene and the duke of Marlborough at the bloody battle of Malplaquet (1709) and negotiated the treaty of Rastatt which ended the war between Louis XIV and Charles VI.
