DIDEROT and D'ALEMBERT. Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raison - Lot 322
DIDEROT and D'ALEMBERT. Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et métiers. Geneva, Pellet 1777 [then : Neuchâtel, Chez la Société Typographique, 1779 ; Lyon, Amable Le Roy, 1780]. 45 volumes in-4, marbled calf with latticework decoration on the boards, spine decorated (Binding of the time). Edition in-4 of this monumental publication, illustrated with numerous engravings printed on 444 copperplates, many of which fold out (140 + 170 + 134). In this copy, the anatomy plates in the second volume, engravings n°15 and 16, and engravings n°17-2 and 18, are printed on the same sheet, that is to say 4 engravings on 2 plates. Nice decorative binding for the 36 volumes of text. The 3 volumes of plates are in marbled basane and the 6 volumes of table in half-basane. At the head of volume 1, a very long critical note of the encyclopedia of the time, extending over 3 pages of endpapers and the back of the false title. This violent diatribe ends with this peremptory judgment: To give an idea of the immorality of the Encyclopedia, it will suffice to say that licentious accounts have been put into the articles on Surgery. Smudging on the edge of some plates at the end of the third volume. Damage to the binding.
