Paris, Moutard, 1784. 4 volumes in-12, marbled calf, ornate spine, title and appendix, red edges (period binding). First edition, decorated with a portrait of the author and 4 fold-out battle plans. The Duc de Villars distinguished himself in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), inflicting heavy losses on the forces commanded by Prince Eugène and the Duke of Marlborough at the bloody Battle of Malplaquet (1709), and negotiating the Treaty of Rastatt, which put an end to the war between Louis XIV and Charles VI. A fine, well-bound copy. Minor rubbing to binding.
