First edition, with 3 folding maps and 9 tables, of this important account of the voyage of the Duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt (1747-1827) to the United States in the last years of the 18th century. Emigrating to America under the Terror, the philanthropist spent three years traveling through much of the northern United States. His fascinating account contains numerous observations on the political constitution, trade, economic resources, rural life, customs and habits of the inhabitants of the United States.
