Abbé de L'Épée was the founder of the first free, public school open to all deaf-mutes: with the aid of drawing and the manual alphabet, he succeeded not only in fixing grammatical nomenclature in the mind of the deaf-mute and expressing the simple relationships of objects, but also in creating a true language, "expressive and fruitful" (cf. En français dans le texte, no. 168).
