L'HOSPITAL (Michel de). Epistolarum seu sermonum libri sex. - Lot 59
L'HOSPITAL (Michel de). Epistolarum seu sermonum libri sex. Paris, Mamert Patisson, 1585. In-folio, supple vellum over boards (contemporary binding). First collective edition of the Latin poems and speeches of chancellor Michel de L'Hospital, who died in 1573. Procured by his friends Scévole de Sainte-Marthe and Jacques-Auguste de Thou, it was reprinted in Lyon in 1592. However, the manuscript's owner, Guy de Pibrac, died in 1584 before it was published, and so not all of L'Hospital's works could be collected. Nevertheless, the volume produced by Patisson is a masterpiece of typography. Handwritten bookplate on title: Entraigues. Freckling on first and last leaves, small old restoration on last leaf, binding largely detached from leaves.
