LOUIS XIV. Mémoires, écrits par lui-même, composés pour le g - Lot 60
LOUIS XIV. Mémoires, écrits par lui-même, composés pour le grand Dauphin son fils, et adressés à ce prince. Paris, Garnery, H. Nicolle, 1806. 2 parts in one volume in-8, porphyry basane, gilt roulette, ornate smooth spine, red title page, marbled edges (Binding of the period).
First edition of the Memoirs written by Louis XIV for the instruction of his son the Dauphin.
These were arranged and published by J. L. M. de Gain-Montagnac.
In 1668, with the help of Monseigneur's tutor, President de Périgny, Louis XIV began writing the Mémoires. [...] The Memoirs were "made under the eyes of the King", based on autograph notes and plans [...] and conversations that Périgny carefully noted down; a first draft was submitted to the King, who corrected and expanded it; the manuscripts, abundantly reworked, crossed out and corrected, clearly show that this was a work entirely conceived and elaborated by the King (see Thierry Bodin's notice in En français dans le texte, n°108).
Attractive contemporary binding.
