BILLAUD-VARENNE (Jacques-Nicolas). Memoirs written in Port-a - Lot 121
BILLAUD-VARENNE (Jacques-Nicolas). Memoirs written in Port-au-Prince in 1818, containing the relation of his travels and adventures in Mexico, from 1805 to 1817; with historical notes and a précis of the American insurrection, from its origin to 1820. Paris, Plancher, Domère, 1821. 2 volumes in-8, paperback, blue paper covers, modern paper title label on spine. First edition. Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) played a key role in the government during the Terror and contributed to the fall of Robespierre. Accused of revolting against the Convention, he was deported to Cayenne. These memoirs, held by some to be apocryphal, concern Mexico between 1805 and 1817 (Sabin, n°5390). Paperback copy, as issued. Slight wetness at bottom corner of a few leaves.
