COMMUNE-AFFRANCHIE. - Tableaux des contre-révolutionnaires m - Lot 132
COMMUNE-AFFRANCHIE. - Tableaux des contre-révolutionnaires mis à mort à Commune-affranchie, ci-devant Lyon, en conséquence des Jugemens rendus par la Commission Révolutionnaire. Commune-Affranchie, de l'imprimerie de Revol, s.d. [1793-1794]. Set of 7 broadsides, each consisting of 2 large plates, mounted and folded into an in-folio volume, half green basane with corners, ribbed spine, orange title page (Modern binding). Volume containing 7 of the 8 large and extremely rare placards which published the names of counter-revolutionaries executed in Lyon in 1793-1794. These large placards, originally posted in public places or town squares, are appalling for the long list they give of the 1,682 victims executed in the name of the Revolutionary Commission between 14 frimaire and 17 germinal year II, i.e. December 4, 1793 and April 6, 1794. The tables provide precise information for each victim: baptismal and family name, age, place of birth, place of residence, status or profession, military rank or civilian employment, and the reason for the judgment pronounced against him or her. Each of these paintings is listed by Gonon in his Bibliographie historique de la ville de Lyon pendant la Révolution française (see nos. 1586, 1613, 1640, 1658, 1695, 1727, 1793 and 1827). Documents of great importance for the history of the city of Lyon during the Revolution, the city having been banished from the Nation after the riots of 1793, doomed to destruction and renamed Commune-affranchie for the occasion. The 7th table is missing, and only the upper plate of the last leaf has been preserved. Paper fragile at the folds.
