DANRY (LATUDE under the name of). Mémoire adressé à Madame l - Lot 139
DANRY (LATUDE under the name of). Mémoire adressé à Madame la marquise de Pompadour, par M. Danry, prisonnier à la Bastille, Et trouvé au Greffe de cette prison d'État, le lendemain de sa prise par les Parisiens. Paris, Gueffier, 1789. In-8, blue half-maroquin, gilt head, untrimmed (Green binding 1870).
A plea by the famous Jean Henry, known as Masers de Latude (1725-1805), imprisoned for 34 years at the request of the Marquise de Pompadour, and famous for having escaped from the Bastille three times, once by means of a rope ladder made from threads of his clothes. He presented the ladder to the Hôtel de Ville with great fanfare. It is now in the Carnavalet museum. Latude had published his memoirs in 1787.
The publication of this Mémoire in 1789 was clearly a demonstration of the despotism of the powerful.
Latude obtained 60,000 livres in damages from the Marquise de Pompadour's heirs.
