Originally written in English and published in London in 1774 under the title The Chains of Slavery, this is Marat's major political work, offering a critique of despotism and denouncing all the means employed by tyranny to achieve its ends; it is considered the first modern treatise on insurrection (Jean Massin, Marat, p. 39).
