Original French edition, printed by Marat himself on his own presses. Originally written in English and published in London in 1774 under the title The Chains of Slavery, this is Marat's major political work, offering a critique of despotism and denouncing all the means employed by tyranny to achieve its ends; it is considered the first modern treatise on insurrection (Jean Massin, Marat, p. 39). Long handwritten note about Marat on first endpapers. Small split without missing at top of leaves Ii1-2, small wetness at foot of quire Qq. Some foxing. Posterior title-piece.
