MARAT (Jean-Paul). Plan de législation criminelle. Paris, Ro - Lot 187
MARAT (Jean-Paul). Plan de législation criminelle. Paris, Rochette, 1790. In-8, bradel black half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated (Modern binding). INED, n°3053. - Martin & Walter, III, 22850. Second edition, enlarged compared to the extremely rare original Neuchâtel edition (1780), which was immediately thrown into the pestle by Marat himself. Portrait of Marat engraved by Blanchard, with this caption: Peuple ! vois ton ami qui pour ta liberté, Au péril de ses jours te dit la vérité. A work largely inspired by Beccaria, in which the revolutionary discusses offenses and punishments, the strength of evidence and presumptions, and how to acquire such evidence and presumptions during the investigation of the case, so as not to injure either justice or liberty, and to reconcile gentleness with the certainty of punishment, and humanity with the safety of civil society. A very well-bound copy. Some light foxing.
