MIRABEAU (Honoré-Gabriel de Riqueti, comte de). On Moses Men - Lot 192
MIRABEAU (Honoré-Gabriel de Riqueti, comte de). On Moses Mendelssohn, on the political reform of the Jews. London, s.n., 1787. In-8, half marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period).
INED, n°3192.
First edition of this plea for Jewish emancipation.
The most important part of this work is an analysis of Christian Wilhelm Dohm's text on the political reform of the Jews (1781), a pioneering work in that it poses the question of the status of Jews in terms of equality before the law, in political terms, and not just in terms of Christian grievances. This text, which makes equality an objective to be achieved at the end of a process of Jewish improvement, offers a striking formulation of the idea of a contract of regeneration. Stimulated by a French situation, it was in turn to have a considerable influence on French debates: a first translation by Bernoulli was published less than a year after the work's publication, but was confiscated. [...] It was Mirabeau who gave the enlightened public a very faithful French adaptation, in 1787 (cf. Les Juifs dans l'histoire, 2011).
From the Neville Jonas Laski library, with engraved armorial bookplate.
