ROBESPIERRE (Maximilien).
Set of 3 pamphlets in-8, stapled. Very rare collection of Robespierre's 4 speeches at the Jacobin Club against war. Robespierre remained firmly opposed to the war waged by the Girondins to destroy the hotbed of counter-revolutionary émigrés established in Coblence. Here, he draws attention to the dangers of war for the liberty of the nation, and denounces a ministerial plot to weaken the Revolution. Why are we now reduced to dealing with foreign war? [...] The seat of evil is not in Coblentz, it is in our midst, it is in your bosom. Before running to Coblentz, at least put yourselves in a position to wage war. [...] We must not declare war now. First and foremost, weapons must be manufactured everywhere without let-up; the national guards must be armed; the people must be armed [...]. Robespierre delivered a total of 5 speeches on war, between December 12, 1791 and January 26, 1792: the text of the first speech was not printed, and only extracts were published in the Journal de la Société (cf. Gérard Walter, Robespierre, I, p. 250).
