SAINT-JUST (Louis-Antoine-Léon de). Esprit de la Révolution - Lot 234
SAINT-JUST (Louis-Antoine-Léon de). Esprit de la Révolution et de la Constitution de France. Paris, Beuvin, 1791. In-8, marbled basane, gilt chain, ornate smooth spine, red title page, yellow edges speckled with red (Period binding). Very rare first edition of Saint-Just's (1767-1794) second work, after Organt (1789), and first truly political one. It is a critical commentary on the first years of the French Revolution, and the entire legislative arsenal deployed for the happiness of the people and the Nation: Europe is marching with great strides towards its revolution, and all the efforts of despotism will not stop it. Fate, which is the spirit of folly and wisdom, makes its way through men and leads everything to its end. France's revolution is not a momentary event; it has its causes, its continuation and its end: this is what I have tried to develop (foreword). Fine restoration to binding (head and spine). With, bound at the head: GUÉROULT. Constitutions of the Spartans, Athenians and Romans. Paris, Née de La Rochelle, 1792. [And bound thereafter]: [GOURCY]. Les Droits et les devoirs d'un peuple libre, ou le Triomphe de la Liberté françoise. S.l.n.d. [De l'Imprimerie de Pain].
