CHAPPE (Ignace). History of telegraphy. Paris, Chez l'Auteur - Lot 269
CHAPPE (Ignace). History of telegraphy. Paris, Chez l'Auteur, 1824. 2 parts in one volume in-8, bradel marbled paper boards, smooth spine, red title page, untrimmed (Period binding). First edition, with 34 double-page plates. A self-published work celebrating the invention of telegraphy by Claude Chappe (1763-1805) in 1791. From the time of Claude Chappe and his brothers onwards, dispatches would travel at the speed of lever manipulation: from one day to one hour. The lines spread throughout France at first, then with victories and conquests to Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands; Russia was equipped between St. Petersburg and Kronstadt in 1834, and the United States between New York and New Orleans in 1837 (En français dans le texte, n°238). A fine copy in contemporary hardback. Period handwritten bookplate on title: St Paul (piece of red paper at tail with the same mention).
