LABOR MOVEMENT. - L'Atelier. Organ of workers' moral and mat - Lot 301
LABOR MOVEMENT. - L'Atelier. Organ of workers' moral and material interests. September 1840 to July 31, 1850. 1840-1850. Set of 128 issues in 3 volumes in-4, long-grained garnet half-maroquin, spine decorated (Modern binding). Extremely rare complete collection of 128 issues of L'Atelier, the first major newspaper written, composed and distributed for and by workers. This anti-capitalist journal, which appeared after the repression of workers' strikes in the 1830s, was born of a coalition of various trades bringing together around 200 workers who claimed to be followers of Philippe Buchez's utopian Christian socialism. The periodical was the most widely circulated and longest-lasting of the capital's workers' papers, lasting ten years before being banned. L'Atelier, which initially called itself Organe des intérêts moraux et matériels des ouvriers, took on the subtitle Organe spécial de la classe laborieuse, written exclusively by workers, from the 5th year onwards, and then, from n°6 of the 8th year (February 27, 1848) definitively adopted the title Organe spécial des ouvriers. The paper's principal editor was typographer Anthime Corbon. L'Atelier wanted to be a great cultural periodical [...]. Written by men who lived at the heart of both militant and working-class Paris, it reflects many aspects of the life of their times [...]. This is why any modern man curious about this fascinating era, the 40s, and this extraordinary Revolution, Quarante Huit, will plunge into it to rediscover its data and atmosphere (M. Agulhon, preface to 1978 facsimile reproduction). Perfectly bound. Complete with the Supplément au n°9 (31 mai 1843) de la 3e année (pp. 73-84), which contains a Discussion sur la certitude morale et religieuse. Mention of second edition. Some dampstaining and soiling in the first volume.
