SAINT-SIMON (Claude-Henri de). Catechism of industrialists. - Lot 315
SAINT-SIMON (Claude-Henri de). Catechism of industrialists. Paris, Imprimerie de Sétier, 1823-1824. 3 parts in an in-8 volume, half havane calf, spine decorated with cold filets, black title page (Binding mid-19th century). Very rare first edition of the major work by Saint-Simon (1760-1825), the great reformer and precursor of socialism. Le Catéchisme des industriels, published in four quires from 1823 to 1824, [...] represents the culmination of his thought and is in a way his philosophical testament, and the most complete exposition of his economic and social doctrine. Saint-Simon's aim was to establish a society founded on science and industry, based on his theory that history is conditioned by the development of technology and production (En français dans le texte, n°236). The volume contains the first three quires, the third of which was written by his secretary and disciple Auguste Comte and published under the title Système de politique positive. Without the fourth and last quire, which is extremely rare, as only a few leaves were printed and never marketed. Some light foxing.
