The Holy Shroud of Besançon.
Christ is depicted front and back within a floral garland.
Brush, red and brown ink and gouache on vellum (small stains around the edges).
Monogrammed lower right P. A. and dated left in Roman numerals 1713
Provenance: on the reverse of the backing board, an old pen-and-ink label: 496/Mr. de Canolles / St Suaire de Besançon 1713.
For the Shroud: 4.5 x 11.3 cm.
For the sheet: 15.3 x 21.4 cm.
The presence of a shroud, or shroud of Christ, probably copied from the one now in Turin, either during its conservation in Lirey in the Doubs (1418 - 1452), or later in Chambéry around 1520, is attested in Besançon from 1523. It was destroyed during the French Revolution (1794).
