China, Late Qianlong period (1735 -1796) Compagnie des Indes. Oval-shaped porcelain dish, decorated with the coat of arms of Commander William DICK GAMAGE in the center, and cobalt blue mosaic friezes featuring crosses and spearheads on the rim and sides. 37 x 31 cm Commandant William Dick Gamage was an English sailor in the service of the East India Company. He commanded several ships for the East India Company, including the "Asia" in 1773 and the "Belmont" from 1780 to 1793, aboard which he died on April 2 after leaving the shores of Bengal. In Calcutta, he married Jane, daughter of Richard Stewart, steward of the East India Company's shipyards in London's Blackwall district.
