CURIOUS AND RARE COMBINATION GAMBLING TABLE, rectangular shape, in amaranth, satinwood and veneer inlaid with light-colored wood, decorated with playing cards, goblets, dice, horns of plenty, foliage, etc., with threefeuille trays. The first reveals a checkerboard and a chessboard, the second is lined with green felt (used) with cavities for bets, and the third forms a desk with a mobile pigeonhole and five small drawers surmounted by five open pigeonholes. Cambered legs carved with an acanthus leaf and terminating in talons. The top is decorated in pen and brown ink with a lively scene of numerous characters in Amsterdam's Town Hall Square, depicting fire pump trials and titled "AFBEELDING VAN DEN DAM VAN AMSTERDAM". Holland, mid-19th century (accidents). H. 75 cm W. 73 cm D. 36 cm Note: This drawing was executed after the engraving by Jan van Vianen (ca 1660 - ca 1726) based on the original painting by Jan van derHeyden(1637-1712). "Jan van der Heyden, a fireman by profession, perfected the fire hose in 1672 with the help of his brother Nicolas, a hydraulic engineer. He modified the design of fire-fighting vehicles, reorganized the volunteer fire brigades in 1685, and wrote and illustrated the first fire-fighting manual (Brandspuiten-boek)".
