LEVASSEUR (René). Mémoires de R. Levasseur (de la Sarthe), ex-conventionnel. Paris, Rapilly, 1829-1831. 4 volumes in-8, half tan basane, spine decorated, smooth head, untrimmed (L. Guétant). First edition of the memoirs of René Levasseur (1747-1834), a former doctor in Le Mans who was a member of the Convention, a supporter of Robespierre, a regicide and a fierce opponent of the Girondins (Tourneux, n°23657). These are an essential source for the study of Jacobism. Lithographed portrait of the author. The first two volumes were prosecuted as containing outrages against royal dignity, the religion of the State, public morality, and an apology for the sovereignty of the people. Beautifully bound copy. Some foxing.
