MANUSCRIT. - Collection of geographical and historical extracts on Egypt. S.l.n.d.[XIXth century]. Manuscript in-4, red half-chagrin (19th century binding).
Interesting manuscript collection concerning the geography, history and antiquities of Egypt (about 500 pages in all).
The manuscript includes several extracts (255 pages): relations of military events that took place during the French army's stay, report to the First Consul on the capitulation of Cairo and its evacuation in 1801, state of the troops; extract from Vivant Denon's Voyage dans la haute et basse Égypte in 1802; an abridged description of the main monuments of ancient Egypt; extracts from Recherches sur la langue et la littérature de l'Égypte by Étienne Quatremère, or from Alexandre Lenoir's Nouvelle explication des hiéroglyphes, etc. There is also a Notice géographique sur l'Égypte, la Barbarie orientale, la Nubie et l'Abyssinie (28 pages).
The section on Egypt also contains, in another hand, a copy of 18 letters by Champollion the younger on ancient and modern Egypt (230 pages).
From the library of Château de Laplagne, with bookplates, including that of M. Laplagne-Barris (1786-1857), a French magistrate who was one of the executors of the Duc d'Aumale's will.
Extensive dampstaining to spine, small crack to upper hinge.
